Jessica currently lives and gardens on 2 acres in Western Pennsylvania (hardiness zone 5b).
- For 15 years, Jessica contributed two weekly columns to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review where she had the pleasure of covering a wide range of gardening topics.
- Jessica was also the co-host of The Organic Gardeners, an award-winning program on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for nearly 20 years.
- Currently, she is the Editorial Director for The Quarto Group’s garden book publishing imprint, Cool Springs Press.
Jessica is a two-time winner of the prestigious American Horticultural Society Book Award and has authored a diversity of gardening books, including the best-seller Good Bug Bad Bug, the award-winning books Attracting Beneficial Bugs to Your Garden and Plant Partners: A Science-Based Guide to Companion Planting for the Vegetable Garden, along with Container Gardening Complete.
As a gardener, Jessica’s passion is growing and preserving enough food for her family’s year-round enjoyment while relying only on organic gardening practices. As a self-declared “bug nerd”, her ornamental gardens focus on native plants that support pollinators and other beneficial insects (though she does also grow some non-native favorites). She tends a large, 12 raised bed vegetable garden, a backyard meadow garden, multiple perennial beds (in sun and shade), and over 55 gorgeous patio containers.
