Correct. You won't get fruit in year 1. But, the plants will have a strong root system and be ready to produce tons of fruit their second year.]]> In reply to Jenny.

I can confirm it: here in NE France, last autumn (2024) I planted Charlotte strawberries in a 3.5 m x 1.24 m raised bed filled with bagged 50/50 topsoil and general purpose compost (approx. 400 litres). I’ve been picking strawberries almost non-stop since early June – it’s now mid-October. There are still quite a few in flower, and I water regularly. I apply a proprietary strawberry fertilizer (high K) twice during the season and mulch with shreddings from my shredder. As it’s getting cooler I protect them with a fleece.

Hi Debbie - You can plant them as closely as 4 plants per square foot. You'll just need to pinch off the runners so they don't become too crowded.]]> In reply to Debbie Taylor.

This was very helpful. I plan on planting them next spring in a 4×4 foot raised bed. I was going to plant one plant per square foot. Is that all right to do?

I don't know of any research, but I do think this partnership would work based on the strawberries forming a living mulch beneath the asparagus which would reduce deep-rooted weed competition and shield the soil to reduce evaporation. Yes, they would be competing for resources but not much because asparagus are deeply rooted and strawberries are shallow rooted.]]> In reply to Katie.

I was wondering about them actually competing for resources…

Thanks for all this info. I put some strawberry plants in a raised bed a couple of years ago, but I’m going to have to correct some mistakes as they aren’t thriving …yet!
