Nope. It will create a stiff, upright head all on its own. No need for you to do anything to the plants. Great question!]]> In reply to Patricia Copple.

In my experience, the white is a little better at attracting beneficial insects, but that's not backed by any official research; just my own observations.]]> In reply to Michelle Miller.

The best way to determine the maturity of lettuce is to look at the "days to maturity" number on the seed packet. When that number of days has passed since you sowed the seeds, it's time to harvest. Lettuce is forgiving though, so harvesting a little later is okay too, as long as you harvest before hot weather arrives.]]> In reply to Becky.

Too much nitrogen in the soil can cause floppy seedlings, or not enough sun. However, know that all varieties of lettuce are kind of floppy when the plants are young. They'll grow more sturdy as they mature.]]> In reply to Erin.

I’m finding the new sprouts can’t hold themselves up as the stems are so thin and weak. I’ve weeded out as they sprouted up. I’ve tied rows of string for them to lean against, but they don’t seem to be hardy enough to hold themselves. Any thoughts on what I’ve done wrong?

I want them to grow to full maturity but I don’t know what to look for to know it’s ready

I decided to try companion planting with some romaine lettuce in my garden; however our growing season was delayed this year due to late frosts in May, so growing from seed wasn’t feasible this time. Unfortunately, the only thing I could find locally is Easter Bonnet Violet alyssum. The label states it has “wonderfully fragrant flowers,” but the word sweet isn’t mentioned. I didn’t have any other option, so I’m going to try this variety. My question is: Does it make a difference whether it’s the standard white blooms, labeled “sweet alyssum;” or will any type alyssum do?
